The world came to a standstill with the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Lockdown was declared by the governments of many countries as a precautionary measure to avoid, control and break the chain of the spread of covid-19 disease.

The world has faced many pandemics, all of which were as devastating as covid-19 during their outbreak. The world has learned how to get through it and has played a crucial role in shaping human history.

Talking about COVID-19, the first lockdown was imposed in China’s Hubei province in January 2020, while the first lockdown in India was imposed on 24th March 2020 for 21 days limiting the movement of the entire population as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of covid-19. Likewise, some other form of lockdown was imposed on the average half of the world. This non-pharmaceutical approach was implemented in numerous countries worldwide to control the spread of SARS- CoV- 2, the virus causing the COVID-19 disease.

The Mortality Rate

Before giving a conclusive statement whether the cure is worse than the disease, let’s get to the impact of covid-19 on the mortality rate and the health of the world.

Before lockdown

After the breakdown of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the world witnessed a sudden rise in the rate of mortality which went on increasing till the lockdown wasn’t imposed. The disease severely affects the respiratory system of individuals.

It weakens the immune system, with damage to the lungs’ alveoli lungs alveoli to the collapse of the lungs. With these symptoms advancing to the severity in the individuals who have contracted COVID-19, there is an increase in the incidence of mortality.

After lockdown

After the enforcement of lockdown, which was taken as an essential step to stop the spread of the disease, Lockdown has effectively helped in controlling and significantly reducing the mortality rate, which has helped in reducing the spread of SARS- CoV- 2 infections. The graph which was seen with a positive peak showed a dip with a flattening curve.

It was WHO that came up with the recommendation of imposing curfews, lockdown, and other restrictions, which helped in spreading awareness regarding the COVID-19 disease, the importance of breaking its chain of the infective period, and protecting the population with this deadly health risk.

The whole intention of imposing a lockdown was to balance everyday life and live with restrictions, which is the only surviving factor in the pandemic situation. With the reports of other variants of the COVID-19 viruses like the alpha variant, beta variant, Gamma variant, and the delta variants, whether you consider lockdown as a voluntary or involuntary measure, it is, for now, the best non-pharmaceutical approach in controlling the spread of covid-19 disease.

The lockdown effect on mental health

With the enforcement of lockdown throughout the world in different corners, we have seen a decline in the number of cases that have been reported so far. But we cannot neglect the fact that this lockdown harms the mental health of society.

With people being restricted and bound inside their homes, they lack physical activities and socializing with friends and colleagues, leading to increased anxiety, depression, restlessness, and fear among the young and old alike. As a result of this, there is a negative impact on the well-being of every individual.

Though lockdown is being associated with harming the physical and mental health of the people, it cannot be neglected that its impact on health is not as worse as the impact of COVID-19 itself. It is difficult to conclude whether the cure was then the disease, but it is unlikely that the government Interventions are worse.
